Standard Generalised Mark-up Language,
or SGML, is an international standard (ISO 8879) published in
1986. SGML embeds mark-up in text to describe documents
as a hierarchical structure of elements. For example, a
book may consist of chapters, which contain paragraphs, and lists,
while lists consist of items, and items and paragraphs contain
text, emphasized phrases, and cited titles. By labelling
such elements with generic identifiers instead of the intended
processing SGML mark-up may identify a chapter heading
rather then specifying a font, leading, and margins SGML
allows multiple text processing applications to process a single
document. Since SGML is defined in an international standard,
its definition is readily available and new applications
can easily be designed. SGML documents are not dependent
on any hardware, software, formats, or operating system.
They are portable and you can exchange them seamlessly with users
who have different systems.
